249 E. Baltimore St.
What's happening?
Jen Lyon of Mean Red Productions purchased the historic Stanley Hong's Mannia Cafe for $750,000 in 2021, with plans to turn it into a venue, lounge and restaurant. The Detroit Historic District Commission approved rehab plans in November 2021. Stanley Hong's Mannia Cafe, designed by architect Nathan Johnson in the Googie style, opened as a Chinese restaurant in 1971 and later was home to Rhythm Kitchen, a hub in the early '90s rap scene. It closed in 1995 and ownership passed between Omega Baptist Church, Grace Fellowship Church and the Detroit Catholic Pastoral Alliance.
